Self Care

Cue “Self Care” by Mac Miller. Self care can often be tossed around as a fix all to our problems. We (me included) often give lists of ideas and lists on lists of self care things we can do to improve our lives that include lighting candles, bubble baths, taking deep breaths. I think this can be very helpful. I practice these things often. I have blog posts and podcast dedicated to this. I wanted to also share some other ways of self care.

Create Boundaries

Boundaries can be very hard. It can seem like you’re being harsh, or disappointing those in your life. This can look like saying no to something when you really don’t have the time, not answering that email after work hours, etc. I have been guilty of all of this. At the end of the day it’s one of the best ways that been able to re-charge and show up as my best, most creative self.

Take a Deep Breath and Drink Water

This would seem like the obvious thing to do. Often times when we are stressed or anxious (or at least me), we can forget to breath. I know I am more likely to slack on my water intake when I’m stressed as well. So drink up!

Surround Yourself with Encouraging People

As a fellow creative, it can be easy to get in my head about my work. To put myself down. I cannot tell you how helpful it has been in my life to surround myself with other creatives! We tend to encourage each other and support each other in our ventures. I am grateful I have them in my life.

Go Outside

This one is my favorite way of self care. Often this is what helps me the most. I love get out in nature. Get your stroller and go for a walk with your kid after work, plan a hike or a bike ride over the weekend. Take dinner outside when it’s nice. Step in your yard and just take a deep breath. Walk to your mailbox. Even a little Vitamin D goes a long ways!

Ched R Peppers

Yes, you read that right. Pro tip: Pregame with some Tums if you’re over 25. Sometimes Ched R Peppers are the salve to my day. I joke about this a lot. But, I know that sometimes a bath or lighting a candle just isn’t going to fix it. So here’s what you need to do. Get in your car, drive to sonic, order a route 44 water, add some of your favorite flavors (I love cranberry + lemon), add an order of Ched R Peppers. Turn the A/C up if it’s a hot summer day, sit there and eat those Ched R Peppers. Take some deep breaths and move along about your day. I swear it helps.
